I took us deeper into the kiss. As I did, she whimpered and I tightened my hold on her because that was the precise moment I realized this was my first kiss with the woman who was destined to be my forever, and I never wanted to let her go.

We were seconds away from things getting out of hand. I should’ve pulled away, but I didn’t know how to stop because everything inside me was screaming victoriously at the realization of a long-held dream.

I knew she was troubled. Torment like that stays in a person’s eyes forever, even if it’s only a hint. I should know because I am the same. Everything happening around us disappeared. The celebratory cheers on the other side of the wall ceased to exist. The catering staff preparing for the momentary influx of guests were no longer near. It was just us: two lost souls who craved more in life but feared they’d never get it. He didn’t have to tell me this for me to recognize it in him. I could see it in his eyes. The intensity in them said it all, and I was certain mine did, too. I might as well have been standing naked in his embrace—exposed and vulnerable—taking shelter in his cocoon.

And I had no business being there.

I love you because of your giant heart, and your fierce need to help others and do what’s right, and because you’ve seen all of the ugly, broken pieces of me, and you love me, too.

I’d cut myself open in front of him, then handed him the knife. But instead of cutting out my heart, Hunter had stitched me back up and somehow made me better.
